How to Overcome Examination Fear and Anxiety

The examination timetable is out. Your heart starts beating faster. Suddenly, everything you have studied seems to disappear from your memory. Sound familiar?

Examination fear is something many students experience. Whether you are preparing for a class test, promotion examination, BECE, WAEC, NECO or JAMB, feeling nervous before an examination can be normal. However, too much anxiety can affect concentration, confidence and performance.

The good news? You can learn to manage it.

📚 1. Start Preparing Early

One of the biggest causes of examination anxiety is last-minute preparation. Trying to learn an entire term's work overnight can make you feel overwhelmed.

Create a realistic study timetable and revise gradually. The earlier you start, the more confident you are likely to feel.

✍️ 2. Practise With Questions

Don't just read your notes repeatedly. Test yourself with class exercises, revision questions and past examination papers.

Practice helps you discover what you understand and where you need more work. It also makes the actual examination feel more familiar.

⏰ 3. Manage Your Time

Break large topics into smaller sections and give yourself achievable daily targets. During revision, take short breaks to rest your mind.

Avoid spending all your study time on one subject while ignoring others. A balanced study plan can reduce feelings of being overwhelmed.

🧠 4. Believe in Your Preparation

Negative thoughts such as “I will fail” can increase anxiety. Replace them with realistic, positive reminders:

“I have prepared. I will do my best. I can handle this.”

Confidence doesn't mean believing you will answer every question perfectly. It means trusting yourself to give the examination your best effort.

😴 5. Get Enough Sleep

Staying awake all night with your books may seem like hard work, but an exhausted brain cannot perform at its best.

Get adequate sleep, especially before an examination. Eat properly, drink enough water and give your body the energy it needs.

🧘 6. Take Deep Breaths

If you feel nervous before or during an examination, pause for a moment. Take slow, deep breaths and relax your shoulders.

A few calm breaths can help you settle your mind and refocus on the questions in front of you.

🚫 7. Avoid Comparing Yourself With Others

Your friend's study hours, grades or confidence do not determine your ability. Focus on your own preparation and progress.

Your biggest competition should be the version of yourself you were yesterday.

🙋 8. Ask for Help

If a subject or topic is confusing, don't struggle alone. Ask your teacher, parent, guardian or a trusted classmate for help.

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. It is a smart step toward improvement.

🌟 Remember: An Examination Is Not Your Identity

An examination measures your performance at a particular time; it does not measure your entire worth, intelligence or future potential.

Prepare early, practise consistently, take care of yourself and believe in your ability to improve.

When examination day arrives, take a deep breath, read the instructions carefully and tackle each question one step at a time.

Don't let fear write your examination for you. Prepare well, stay calm and give it your best shot!
